Synopsis

There was a time when the world of Irathosia was teeming with magic. It existed in all places and in all things - breathing life into the world and shaping it fundamentally. Magic existed without bound - with no laws, no governing body to control it, and no limit to how powerful one could become. Gods walked the earth - persons so renowned in their craft that their name became synonymous with the power they wielded. If there was a source of power, there was somebody who had claimed the title of godhood for their mastery over it. As time passed and their expertise grew, these persons amassed incomprehensible power - magic capable of reshaping reality and permitting new modes of existence. Gods grew their domains to serve their and their followers' whims. These select few learned to harness the magic of the world and take it for themselves.

There was a time when magic had been conquered - a time when magic existed only for the gods and those who served them. Magic had all but been harnessed - reshaped and repurposed - used only to serve a select few. Magic was understood in its entirety; not because our understanding of it had grown, but because we made it what it had become.

There was a time when every last mote of magic had been drained from the world.

And it rebelled.

All those who held magical power were given an ultimatum by the strongest amongst the Gods - relinquish your magic willfully, or have it taken from you. In an attempt to create a perfect, boundless heaven, one God had attempted to siphon the magic from the world to better achieve their vision of heaven. They turned their sight from this world now devoid of magic to those who held what was once its power. Some fought to preserve their power and domains. Some bargained to submit and keep a portion of their magic for their followers. Others gave up everything to save their skin. While many of the details have long-since been forgotten to the world, there are several absolute truths to come of this time;

The Arcane Revolution saw the overwhelming majority of Gods slain - including the original transgressor. Only remained eight after its conclusion.

Magic was taken from the gods and raw magic was returned to every corner of the world. Magic was fundamentally restructured - governed by the laws of magic and functioning off of The Wave ™️

What few gods survived The Arcane Revolution dedicated their existence after the fact to the preservation of the sanctity of magic.

A decade has passed since The Arcane Revolution. The world is new and underdeveloped as magic was forcefully returned to every corner of the world - raw, and untouched. The only place largely untouched by the widespread destruction of The Arcane Revolution was the city at the world's heart - neutral ground for all of the gods as the largest congregation of religious and magic followers prior to the revolution; the city of Irathiski.

Irathiski persists as the only city left in the world - a cultural hub where daily life remains largely unchanged as magic is reintroduced to the world. It is home to a council of cultural leaders dedicated to the preservation and education of magic - the Sovereign Council, composed of eight figures that advocate for the prevalence of their respective schools of magic in society.

Following The Arcane Revolution, much of the latent magic in the world has taken a more palpable form that has allowed for its continued use in all spheres of society - crownstones; low level magic items that allow for the common man to cast magic. They are a measure taken by the gods to ensure magic not be locked away only to be accessed by a select few. With these crownstones, however, have come some unfortunate detriments to society.

Crownstones have taken hold of the city. With magic being more prevalent than ever - despite being weaker than ever - it has become a pressing social issue that has led to widespread civil unrest. There is violence in the streets as the people now have access to lethal tools, and politicians campaign for the recall of crownstones altogether. There is corruption in the government as lobbyists campaign for larger subsidies for the crownstone industry. There is dismay in the public as the role of magic in society is questioned in its entirety. This city is hurting, and there's nowhere else to go - unless, of course, one wants to brave the world outside the safehaven of Irathiski. The very same world that is now devoid of civilization as magic was forcefully returned to it - and the creatures residing in it.
